About us

Schola pugnatoria  is a group of historical European martial arts enthusiasts from Celje (Schola pugnatoria Celeiana) and Maribor (Schola pugnatoria Marpurgensis) primarily dedicated to the study, reconstruction and training of the original Middle European fighting system known as Kunst des fechtens based on the teachings of Johannes Liechtenauer, the German grand master of the second half of the 14th century.

Our study is based on various sources – facsimiles and transcriptions of the original 15th century manuscripts, such as texts of Sigmund Ringeck, Peter von Danzig, Hans Talhoffer, Paul Kal and Baumann’s or Wallerstein codex, as well as translations and modern interpretations of ancient fighting techniques and skills. We also share and make good use of experiences and findings of other members of the international HEMA community.

However, our main interest is training and interpreting the written or drawn techniques of the old masters through practical drills. At this moment, our main focus is wrestling, dagger and longsword fighting ( both armoured and unarmoured).

Schola pugnatoria Celeiana is one of the hosts of the major Slovenian HEMA event HEMA Celje which takes place in Celje every third weekend in September and is organised by the HEMA Federation of Slovenia. Schola pugnatoria  is also one of the founding members of HEMAFS.
